How do I know if my child needs therapy?

Changes in your child’s behavior and personality can leave you wondering, “Does my child need therapy?”  Many parents wait to seek counseling because they attribute their child’s behavior to a developmental phase, assuming their child will grow out of this phase and will work through it. Sometimes these changes become quite noticeable as a result of a traumatic experience, while other times they can emerge out of the blue. Regardless of the reason, these changes are important to pay attention to as they can help you determine if and when to seek counseling for your child. Under the “Services” tab above, you will find a list of changes you may have noticed in your child, tween or teen that warrant talking to a therapist.

What is therapy like?

Sessions are usually focused on improving interpersonal relationships, communication, coping strategies, as well as regulating emotions and impulses.  Working with minors means that coordination with an adult caregiver is most helpful and needed. This involvement differs depending upon the child, their age and other factors. Confidentiality is the cornerstone of this practice.  We will let you know how the sessions are progressing, but not disclose what is shared during the session so that we may maintain a trusting relationship with your child.  However, if at anytime we assess that your child is in danger or might be dangerous to others, if abuse/neglect is suspected or reported, or if there are any other concerns related to the health and welfare of your child, the parent/legal guardian will be notified immediately so that the necessary actions and precautions can be taken. We are also available to consult with teachers, school counselors, psychiatrists and others who are supporting your child.

How long are sessions and how often do I attend?

Therapy sessions usually last around 50-60 minutes and typically occur every week.  However, length and frequency may vary according to your child's individual needs. Weekly sessions at the onset of therapy is recommended as a strong therapeutic relationship between your child and therapist is essential to the process.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept AETNA, AmeriGroup, Anthem, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, CIGNA & Evernorth, Humana/Tricare, United Healthcare, Out of Network/Self-pay.

What is your cancellation policy?

A 24-hour cancellation is required. If a session is missed or cancelled without 24-hours notice, you will be responsible for paying a cancellation fee.  Most insurance companies will not pay a cancellation fee.

Will you participate in legal/custody disputes?

I do not testify in court, nor am I qualified to do psychological assessments for any purpose, such as child custody cases or visitation recommendations. Because the client-therapist relationship is built on trust with the foundation of that trust being confidentiality, it is often damaging to the therapeutic relationship for the therapist to be asked to present records to the court, testify whether factual or in an expert nature, in court or deposition.  I generally do not provide records or testimony unless compelled to do so by a court.

What is your emergency policy?

My practice is an out-patient facility, so I am not available 24/7 to provide emergency or crisis response services. In the event of an emergency, please call 911 immediately or contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline (a free, 24-hour crisis line) by dialing 988 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room.  Although I check my messages regularly, if you call me during a crisis, I cannot guarantee that I will be immediately available.
